Organisational structure refers to how the workers within a business are organised and how they relate to each other. The type of structure that a business has reflects how it behaves. This will depend on the size of the business, its aims and its corporate culture.

UNISON, the UK’s biggest public service trade union, has a complex structure that reflects the complex nature of the work that it carries out. Its structure is split by function and by region.

Changes in an organisation’s internal or external environment can have an impact on its organisational structure. To adapt to these changes an organisation may have to restructure its operations to improve efficiencies and remain competitive. For example, Opel, General Motors’ loss-making European subsidiary, has recently announced a restructure of its German operations. (BBC, 28th February 2013)
