Facebook are in the news again with another mind-bogglingly big purchase. The company have announced that they will buy Oculus VR, a Californian based company who specialises in virtual reality technology, an exciting avenue for the gaming industry. The VR’s first product is the Oculus Rift, which is essentially a head-set that offers an immersive video game experience. Facebook will purchase the start-up company for $2bn/£1.2bn.
The internet is increasingly becoming a platform for all manner of projects to get off the ground via sites like Kickstarter, as in the case of the Oculus Rift which was developed with funds of $2.4,/£1.5m raised through crowd-funding and subsequent investments of $75m.
Say what you want about Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, but he’s no slow poke when it comes to the future; on the subject of Oculus’ technologies he has stated that they could ‘change the way we work, play and communicate’. Zuckerberg goes onto state: ‘Mobile is the platform of today, and now we’re also getting ready for the platforms of tomorrow.’
Though the Oculus Rift has yet to be released, more than 75,000 orders have been placed for development kits, and the figures are only likely to increase. Though many gamers deeply mistrust Facebook’s acquisition of Oculus VR, it’ll be interesting to see what the future holds for both companies.
