Change takes place at a staggering rate, especially when it comes to the internet. Websites compete with one another and regularly update and develop their layouts and interfaces. Facebook and Youtube, in particular, are notorious for regularly changing their appearance.
Twitter has recently announced a redesign of its own, one that looks strangely familiar. Many users of the social networking site have commented (in 140 characters or less) how similar the new profile layout looks like Facebook’s timeline, and you’d be hard-pressed to argue otherwise.
The redesign, in short, allows a cover photo across the full length of the screen with a display picture on the left-hand side. A user’s most popular tweets will appear larger with more of an emphasis on photos, users can also pin particular tweets to the top of the page and decide how they want to view other profiles.
The new profile design has understandably divided opinion, some like the increase of customisation on offer, while others feel it’s too much of a departure from the simplicity that made Twitter special.
The new spangled profile pages will be available to a small majority of users before being made available across the micro-blogging site in the coming weeks. (BBC News, 08 April 2014)
