Drone technology is rapidly becoming more and more commonplace. Amazon are already trialling its drone delivery service, Facebook also has plans to connect areas of the planet without web access using drones, satellites and lasers having purchased UK drone maker Ascenter for £20m/£12m, earlier this year. Now Google have brought solar-powered drone maker Titan Aerospace for an undisclosed sum.
Google, like Facebook, are intending to use drones to expand internet access. Titan Aerospace itself says it expects ‘initial commercial operations’ by 2015. The drones are solar powered and can fly for years at a time.
Google has stated:
‘It’s still early days, but atmospheric satellites could help bring internet access to millions of people, and help solve other problems, including disaster relief and environmental damage like deforestation. It’s why we’re so excited to welcome Titan Aerospace to the Google family.’ (BBC News, 14th April 2014)
