Investment appraisal

Businesses invest for many reasons, such as, to grow or to improve existing facilities. United Utilities identified a need to improve its management of water and waste water in the area around Millom and the Duddon Estuary. The investment decision was ultimately based on a cost-benefit analysis. Cost-benefit analysis involves taking into account both financial factors and wider social issues.

Maritime Craft Services (MCS), a Scottish maritime services company, is to expand its operations after investing almost £9 million in three new vessels. The boats, which will service offshore energy operations in Germany, Denmark and the UK, could help generate up to £3.2 million turnover per year. Investment appraisal is a vital tool when making this type of investment decision. (BBC, 22nd November 2012)
